Trade Show Industry History

Trade shows have long been one of the most powerful ways for businesses to connect, showcase their products, and build lasting relationships. Long before digital marketing and online advertising, companies relied on face-to-face interaction to earn trust, demonstrate value, and grow their brands.

That hasn’t changed.

While technology has evolved, the core of the trade show industry remains the same—bringing people together.

The Early Days of Trade Shows

The concept of trade shows dates back centuries to open-air markets and international fairs in Europe, where merchants gathered to exchange goods and ideas. In the United States, trade exhibitions began gaining traction in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as industries expanded and transportation improved.

By the mid-1900s, trade shows had become a cornerstone of American business. Large convention centers were built in major cities, allowing companies from across the country to gather under one roof to showcase innovation, launch products, and meet customers face-to-face.

The Evolution of the Modern Trade Show

Over the decades, trade shows have continued to evolve.

In the early years, booths were often custom-built structures—heavy, expensive, and difficult to transport. As the industry grew, so did the need for more flexible solutions. This led to the development of portable and modular trade show displays that made exhibiting more accessible for businesses of all sizes.

Today, companies have more options than ever—from fully custom exhibits to lightweight portable displays and rental solutions that offer both flexibility and impact.

But while the tools have changed, the goal remains the same:
stand out, connect, and leave a lasting impression.

My Journey in the Trade Show Industry

My journey in this business began in 1994.

At the time, the industry looked very different than it does today. Displays were less refined, options were more limited, and the process wasn’t nearly as streamlined as it is now. But what stood out then—and still stands out today—is the value of personal connection.

Over the years, building Impact Displays has given me the opportunity to work with companies of all sizes, across nearly every industry you can imagine. From small startups attending their very first show to established brands exhibiting nationwide, each project has been unique.

One of the most rewarding parts of this business has been the people.

Trade shows have taken me to cities and towns all across the United States. Along the way, I’ve met business owners, marketing teams, entrepreneurs, and innovators—each with their own story, goals, and vision for growth.

That’s something you don’t get from behind a screen.

What 30+ Years Has Taught Me

After more than three decades in this industry, a few things have become very clear:

  • Every exhibitor wants to stand out in a crowded space
  • Quality and reliability matter more than ever
  • Deadlines are real—and support matters
  • And most importantly, relationships drive long-term success

I’ve also seen firsthand how the wrong display partner can create unnecessary stress—especially when dealing with low-quality products or unreliable suppliers.

That’s one of the reasons we’ve always focused on offering high-quality, dependable trade show displays, backed by real support.

Looking Ahead

The trade show industry continues to evolve, but one thing remains constant—people still want to connect in person.

There’s something powerful about shaking hands, having real conversations, and experiencing a product or brand up close. That’s why trade shows continue to be such an important part of doing business.

And it’s why we’re still passionate about being part of it.
